Dr. Joon Gon Kim (김준곤) Passes Away

September 29, 2009
Approximately 12:00pm, South Korea Time Zone/Date

My grandfather, Doctor Joon Gon Kim, just passed away about an hour ago. I wanted to write something here to give praise for his faithful and encouraging life:

Dr. Joon Gon Kim, an outstanding Korean Christian Evangelist.

It was springtime and the rain was falling gently as Dr. Kim's family was enjoying the day. Suddenly, without any warning, an angry band of communist guerrillas invaded the village where Dr. Kim lived, killing everyone. The family of Dr. Kim's was not spared. The guerrillas killed Dr. Kim's wife and Dr. Kim's father. Dr. Kim was beaten and left for dead. In the cool rain of night he awoke and fled to the safety of the mountains with his young daughter (my mom).

Dr. Kim is a man of God and learned from Scriptures to love his enemies and pray for those who persecuted him. The Spirit of God impressed upon him that he was to return to the village, seek out the communist leader who had led the attack and tell the communist leader, who killed Dr. Kim's wife and father, that he loved and forgave the communist leader, and to speak to the communist leader of God's love through Christ. Struck by the Grace of God, the communist leader knelt in prayer with Dr. Kim and gave his life to Christ. Within a short time, a number of other communists were converted to Christ and Dr. Kim helped build a church for these and other new Christians. Dr. Kim later became the pastor of one of the largest churches in South Korea, and founder of Korean Campus Crusade for Christ.

He will be missed, but in final words, he would want me to say "Never doubt the power of forgiveness."
